Artist Statement

Kevin McGarry
I work predominantly in printmaking and photography
Proposal. Base Images and Graphite Silkscreens prints.
[Base Images] is a project I have had in my mind since 1994, when I completed my
Masters Degree with ‘Base 1 Information’. During this year whilst working as a
visiting artist at Emily Carr Institute,Vancouver I have had the time to start planning
and constructing 9 more images for this project.
The common factor is that they all use a 6ft x 4ft sheet of perspex in the making of
the work and in it’s final presentation.
The first Base 1 Information was influenced by Arthur Miller’s book ‘The Crucible’
and how much information was given to me in one teaching week in Cambridge.
This image was constructed by placing a camera on the ceiling of the studio and
taking a picture with a cable release, whilst I was sandwiched between the layers of
information.
The final digital print goes back on the floor and you walk over it adding your weight
and information.
[Base Images]: Largely autobiographical, exploring fundamental questions relating
to perception and narrative. The photographic and printed motif as a pictorial strategy
suggests practice that parallels the cinematic and engages with new media technology
as contemporary European painting referenced the political intervention of the camera.

'Global Dogs' was produced at the Banff Centre, Alberta in a response to develop a process of transfering graphite through silkscreens for Base 7 ' Graphite Man' which is a 6ft x 4ft graphite/drawing.
