Artist Statement

My recent drawings explore the status and idealization of the home in contemporary culture. With implications of safety and refuge and the promise of freedom and domestic bliss, the fantasy of the perfect home persists as a marketing triumph. My drawings often undercut such rosy visions, and I am fascinated by how the desire for an ideal creation becomes a complicated reality. For me, the suburban home is the forever unrealized, always imperfect American dream. My pieces ultimately reveal how we inhabit a space and a space inhabits us.

In my “Study after Enclave” and "Study for a New Suburbia" collages, minimal blocks shown in isometric perspective simulate buildings and houses. Using the same simplified forms that are found in my sculptures, these works on paper suggest brief narratives that hint at life both as it is and as it should be.

My one hundred page book, "Discovering Home: the complete guide to longing and possibility", combines ink drawings and text in a form borrowed from home planning guides. Unlike typical architectural manuals, my pieces twist both image and word. The text combines altered advertising copy, imaginative musings, and fragmented borrowings from everyday dialogue. Each house is inscribed with psychological content and critique, revealing the motivations and anxieties of potential buyers.
