Artist Statement

My work centers on the relationship of industrial architecture to the surrounding landscape. Formally, I’m interested in the juxtaposition of the geometric shapes of the buildings against the lines of the natural landscape, but I’m also interested in documenting the relationship of abandoned industry to the landscapes it has shaped.

Referencing observational drawings done on site, my paintings are process oriented: layering collage, ink, and encaustic. The way this process distorts the forms from the original drawings parallels the course of a visual memory degrading and shifting over time. In the finished pieces, some elements are fully articulated: familiar and concrete. Other elements become simplified, exaggerated, or transformed, allowing viewers to feel as if they have stumbled upon the record of a half-forgotten journey– a blurred remembrance of a landscape rather than a precise rendering.
