Over the past few years I have taken a number of approaches to print, painting and new media in my artistic practice. My latest works are large-scale drawings rendered with india ink and brush on paper that resemble traditional wood engravings.
The landscape paintings reflect my interest in ornament and fantasy landscape/literature and depict unsettling and desolate areas that have been imbued with excessive patterning. Although the environments are devoid of people, they suggest a human presence through the shaping of nature and architecture. This imagery presents a sense of inaccessibility and creepiness that is intended to make the viewer question the purpose of such a place.
The figurative works share the same subjects of fantasy and intricate mark-making. In Victorian Bust, reminiscent of a traditional 19th century portrait bust, the head and shoulders have been detailed with elaborate curlicue patterns. The partial figure floats above the ground, lifted up by a strange embossed tubing. Inspired by Victorian patterns and fantasy/science fiction literature and illustration, this work utilizes disparate subject matter to deliberately blur the lines between what is fictional and what is historically referenced.
