Artist Statement
I started this series, which I call Empire, in 2005 to express my fears around what I saw as the newest incarnation of Empire, the U.S.A. Since it began with Colonialism, I feel that the country has never really shaken off the drive to accumulate and acquire, which  has created some regrettable consequences.  Rather than making direct references to current events, which would only tend to polarize people, anger and divide them, I chose to create a narrative of allegories from multiple historical and cultural sources to tell the story of Imperialism as a repeating cyclical impulse.

The palace of Versailles is the setting for this recreated history of Colonialism. The heroic paintings and frescoes are replaced with cultural documents such as  drawings of slave life on colonial Caribbean sugar plantations, civil war and antebellum period drawings, baroque pornography and old master's paintings. Antique maps replace the floor creating a worldwide gaming field in which a child aristocrat, Louis the 19th,  plays games with his toy soldiers, oil wells, sometimes his nursemaid, and other visual clues, jokes, and symbols. Outside the palace a bizarre economy is under way in which the beautiful, exotic birds are the slaves of the ugly storks.

Slavery and domination make all of this opulence possible, but can only be maintained for so long. The tightly controlled equilibrium and formal symmetry give way, as the entire composition begins to sway as if onboard a ship, then it all comes apart as the servants and mythological creatures revolt, nature reasserts herself, and the generalized sense of oppression comes to a final, chaotic, and somewhat whacky conclusion.
