Artist Statement

These ThreadWorks deal with the fragility and transience of language and interpretation. I collaborate with published authors, using fragments of their texts, sometimes in combination with my own, to create a new sculptured text that is open to the interpretation (and frustration) of each viewer.

The Fragment Series is inspired by Anne Carson’s book If Not, Winter, a collection of recovered fragments from Sappho’s scrolls. Dirty Love Poems are exactly what they claim to be. The Ode Series reinscribes texts by authors who write about language (including Julia Kristeva, Walter Benjamin, and Hafiz); reading, writing, storytelling, and interpretation are all focal subjects for these works.

I am interested in telling stories through multiple voices, claiming the written word as physical material, uncovering narratives layered in geographical sites and historical memory, and reinstating presence using a light touch.
