Artist Statement

In the end of the movie “The Never Ending Story” Bastien holds in his hand a single grain of earth. The Empress says this piece of earth is the last of what is left of her world. A world that exists because of the worlds imagination. Bastien must imagine the world and by re-imagining the world save it.

This project of drawings are a day by day saving of the world. My drawing are about imagination. The only reference material I have is this idea taken from “The Never Ending Story”: that a worlds needs imagination in order to survive. My work is strictly from my mind and each drawing is an exercise in invention. I hinge much of the imagery on landscape, but they are only cues or parts of my process of drawing. Funnily enough, as I draw, most of the imagery seems to be about destruction; this is neither intentional nor calculated, as the work is about invention and creation. This project is a performance, if you will, of a day by day attempt at re-imagining Bastien’s final commitment to bring back, once again to imagine. Coupled with this is a re-writing of Bastiens and the Empress’s dialogue, a rewriting for each day. I’ve included only one example at the bottom of this page to save space for the imagery.

Dialogue example for Saving the World #1:

Can you tell me why you sit there, why you don’t open your eyes?, she said. I can’t open my eyes, I can’t listen to you and if I listened to you I would be lost, lost to this space, the space you say I must make, must live within, he said. But this is me, my world is filled with your eyes, my life and a space that jumps and lives within itself, O if you could only see, only see those stretches of my life in here. Do you not care, do you only care that something must be solid, must worthy itself into being from rational unliving?, she said. My life isn’t possible, he said, my life would not be worthy of you, not worthy, for if it was I wouldn’t sit here, with my feet on the ground and suffer in this fear, this fear of stepping out and attempting, attempting this space. But you must, she said, else we die, we die and all is left to nothing.
