Artist Statement

I construct scenes which cause a subtle disquiet. In many of my recent paintings I have made the illusion of picture space unstable and undermined consistent perspective. I often include elements reminiscent of still-life vanitas or of the landscape painting of the 19th century. This was a time of spiritual aspiration when painters strove to represent the sublime moment in their work. This yearning after an expression of the sublime tends to direct me instead towards issues of unattainability and the contingent drive to 'discover' which is so indefatigable in human nature.                          While at a residency in Vermont last year, I became fascinated by the New England homes (as a European in America for the first time the wooden buildings were exotic to me). I produced a series of collages in which idealised domestic interiors were subverted by curtains of paint or by the insistent duplication of elements of decor. "Meaning" always slips away, what remains, and is reflected back to us, is simply the fact of our seeking. The collages are reproduced here as my portfolio.

When Making paintings, I proceed through a relentless process of application and removal of paint - recommitting to and then questioning my practice as I go. I work until areas are polished like fresco plaster by the sander. The resulting image can be a hybrid of several thwarted scenes in which illusory picture space is simultaneously articulated and denied through the painting process.
