Artist Statement

A main source of inspiration comes from the collecting of vintage United Nations memorabilia. This collection of souvenir plates, children's books, cookbooks, card games, and United Nations Concert Benefit Albums suggest a peaceful idealism once believed achievable under a global governing body.  Divergent feelings of hopeful idealism, genuine concern, disillusionment, and cynicism in regards to the many world shaping organizations and initiatives, offer a tension between humor and pathos that is indicative of the mood of the work that I make.

I see myself as an observer, participant, and heir to a rapidly changing global culture.  While the world has struggled to come to terms with an inescapable cultural convergence and interdependence, I am hopeful that systems of all kinds are reorganizing themselves with respect to a growing self-awareness and increasingly audible world conscience.  Much of my work makes manifest in various forms, an imagined, well-intentioned, world reform organization that seeks to promote and implement policy that supports basic human qualities such as tolerance, understanding, fairness, subjective life satisfaction, and measures their effectiveness in smiles per million.

Humor is an effective way to penetrate a viewer’s defensive guard, but instead of trying to change anyone’s mind I want to express the importance of people/the individual, and offer an honest appraisal of their/his/her hopes, capabilities, and flaws. It is for this reason that I feel that it is necessary for the art of our time to simultaneously reflect a world fractured and polarized; a world (not yet) unified under a planetary crisis common to us all.
