Artist Statement
I have largely been inspired by the work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, and identify with his vision of transcending art from out of the gallery context and merging it with common life. Within my work, I am interested in bridging the gap between the commercial art market and consumerist culture, most specifically through using screenprinting as a vehicle to transport the work into other sectors of life. As illustrated with my images, I have deliberately chosen to manifest my work in formats that are ephemeral, disposable, and self-destructive in nature. Typically, many of my works do not have concrete dimensions, are destroyed after they are exhibited, or the only record of them is the take-one object or documentation of the piece. Conceptually, this relates to the ideas that I am interested in, with exploring themes such as consumerism, commercialism, masculinity, sexuality, gender, and identity.
