Artist Statement
I would describe my early upbringing and schooling as very multiculturally oriented. I was raised between Germany and the United States. When my father retired from the military he settled in rural southern Louisiana. That was a culture shock that has defined my life. I learned early on how to grease scalps and braid hair well enough to moonlight at my own mothers hair salon. These are the core elements of my current subject matter.

On the surface, I am investigating the sculptural and textural aspects of ornate and dynamic hair braiding and morphing. I don’t view them necessarily as portraits, although many images are bits and pieces from portraits of myself, my friends, and Nigerian photographer Ojeikere. On another level, much like Ojeikere, they are views that reveal the “hairdo” as object. The audience decides whether or not these have become recognizable images, landscapes, or references to the body.
