Artist Statement
I make work that is based around things that I don’t understand. Most recently what I mean by “things” are small yet devastating periods of change in individuals or groups. Because a lot of my work revolves around the much ballyhooed, new age referenced concept that the search for meaning is the meaning itself, and because my process mirrors that, diversity and experimentation are integral to my drawings. I treat the things I make as ways for me to learn, relate and form a unique perspective with personally confusing concepts, and in so doing, create for myself a new experience.
With regard to process, I begin by arranging shapes and objects cut from my own previous drawings, redrawn from observation, and research, imagined or gathered from scraps of leftover paper into different compositions and scenes where I can re-contextualize their original connotations or strip the representational part of them away entirely. Sometimes they become iconographic narrative elements. Sometimes they serve more as solutions for surface, shape, color, design and other formal elements. Working with knives and glue as primarily as painting materials allows me to both build upon and deconstruct the piece into something that creates a new and unexpected dialogue with familiar, repetitive and somewhat parasitic elements.
Though, I have a pretty unrestricted attitude regarding reappropriation, images of nakedness, abstract precious forms (ie. jewelry, sculpture), and physical phenomena permeate my work and are used throughout as keystones in an evolving visual language. These elements come together in a sort of mystic battle royale that is slightly less epic as it is embarrassing. I am interested in the missteps, contradictions and odd moments that take place in the search for clarity. I am also interested in the backwards things we do when destruction seems like the only option that isn’t stale. When those two paths cross, I think the potential can be amazingly insightful, sad, menacing and funny. I work under the assumption that mystery feeds belief and that belief is among the most rare and interesting human capabilities.
