Artist Statement
Class is the focus of my work. I grew up in a Midwest prairie village. The farmers' co-op grain elevator was the tallest building in town. Surrounded by unobstructed sky, 360 degree horizon within which I was at the center; geography, four seasons and church determined my person. School was limited to the three “R”s. While always threatened by cosmic elements, our lives were remarkable by their sameness. My rural, white, protestant naiveté did not prepare me for urban relocation and negotiation. My art practice teases me to playfully address my sense of “invisible” through riddles and back stories in my own language. Sichoo the curtain, Grey the drawing, and Hair Net Project (a collaboration with photographer Barbara Beirne) speak to the “invisible” class.
