Artist Statement

I create text based work in a variety of media, exploring the tenuousness of meaning, frequently using materials of an ephemeral nature. Often site specific and drawing from the history or day to day occurrences of the location, I adopt/adapt a variety of voices and sources for each text: factual, poetic or mundane.

The passage of time is often integral to the completion of each work. The footsteps of the audience transform installations of powdered materials. An initially legible text is altered into a set of purely visual marks and any message is gradually lost. The subject, source and site of each reflects this transience of message.

Other projects depend on natural forces to slowly modify the forms. During a residency on Governors Island, I fire-branded texts into clusters of decaying tree stumps near Ft Jay. Another installation, Extra Limb, in a former munitions warehouse, used seaweed wrapped letter forms that shift with temperature and humidity changes. Both series used texts addressing the island’s transition from a military base to a cultural, recreational and educational space.

A new project, All Consuming, recently prototyped at Sculpture Space, uses birdseed cake letters to list dead cities and our distance from them in miles and years. Gone to Seed ‘posts’ online confessions in scattered birdseed, which are quickly consumed by creatures unconcerned with guilt or redemption.

Artist Bio / CV

Nicholas Fraser’s most recent projects include Ground Rules, a performance/installation in Nizhny Tagil, Russia as artist-in-residence for the 2nd Ural Biennale and new public installations for the Art Prospect Festival in St. Petersburg, both in September 2012.

He was a Sculpture Space resident and a BRIC Media Fellow in 2012 and an artist-in-residence at LMCC’s SwingSpace on Governors Island in 2011, where he completed Branding Projects, fire-branding texts into tree stumps clustered near the 200-year-old Fort Jay. These installations are semi-permanent.

Fraser’s ephemeral installations were recently featured at the Flux Factory, the Bronx Art Space and in the exhibition Escape from New York in a former silk dying factory in Paterson, NJ. Two installations were also included in the 2009 Art in Odd Places Festival along 14th street.

Fraser’s semi-invisible wall texts were featured in Mixed Messages at La Mama La Galeria and at Taller Boricua. His video work was included in PixelPops 2011 in Paris, Camagüey Festival of Video Art in Camagüey, Cuba, Videos on the Front at Interstate Projects in Brooklyn, Videophagy/Videofagia at Function13 & Hotshot Gallery in Toronto and in the Giguk Video Art Festival in Gießen, Germany.

His work has been exhibited at Jack the Pelican Gallery (Brooklyn) and Brain Factory (Seoul) and Eyedrum Gallery (Atlanta).

He earned an MFA at the School of Visual Art and completed a residency at the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting in 2008.

Born in the U.K., he lives and works in Brooklyn.
