Artist Statement

Through my drawings I explore the language of sculpture in a two-dimensional space by creating imaginary topographical forms on paper. In attempting to establish a fluid relationship between the real and the imaginary, I am creating a meditation on the natural world and humankind’s role in both its destruction and reconstruction.

The confrontation between my personal experience of fantasy and reality—as well as of construction and destruction—is the point of departure for the Cracks series. I create these pieces using strong paper that has the sturdiness of parchment. Out of the limpid whiteness of the page protrude the smaller sculptural branches and flowers that seem to float in space. These drawings are executed on flat surfaces with some volumetric relief or bas-relief that takes up either the entire paper or parts of its surface. In other pieces, I have used materials to depict a crater or fantastical landscapes.

By ripping selected areas of the paper, I create holes and convexities that serve as the central parts of the sculptural forms. I use papier-mâché to alter the surface of the paper, combining it with artificial plants, flowers, glitter and watercolor. The result is a completely organic and altered surface on paper.
