Artist Statement

The "oneliner"-drawings by Thomas Eller consist of one line that depicts, faces, bodies, or fragments of of human features. This body of work is part of a more extensive series of "TV-drawings" that the artist has made for about twenty years and that have never been shown publicly or privately. This work is an almost compulsive attempt to translate human faces and features into graphic notations that represent something between a diagramatic recording of the eyes´ movement while looking at faces and an essential recording of the subject depicted.

One could say the drawings by Thomas Eller are a negotiation between the subject matter and the first viewer/draftsman.

That is the quality that links the drawings to Thomas Eller`s  photographic work that goes beyond the limits of the technical medium by cutting out photographic objects that represent  instances in space and time that are very different from picture formats of central perspective that still informs today´s photography.Thomas Eller photos are anomalies within the viewer´s space-time-continuum and call into question the position of the viewer, as well as that of the image.
