Artist Statement

Matthew Fisher began his investigation of the soldier as subject shortly after the United States 2003 invasion of Iraq. Invoking a unique American art historical lens, Fisher’s work simultaneously addresses our current global political scene and a deep personal narrative. Combining issues that have been a part of our existence since the beginning of time: love, war, nature, and the passage of time. As Fisher himself notes, “The actions depicted are odd: a soldier holding a leaf over his eye, or staring into an empty spider web, or the pause in a conversation while standing too close to one another. Within the pictures, there's a fragment of conscience, mistrust, and just enough information to force the viewer to complete the rest of the story.”
