Artist Statement

My current body of work, imagining the Garden, examines the space and idea of the garden.

The Pleasure Garden is a real & an imagined place, a theatre of culture. It is both nature & artifice.

Gardens are investigations of depth & incite motion. They are in an ongoing state of becoming - moving through them, our experience unfolds over time.

Taking a dynamic, Baroque approach to space, my recent work explores this invitation to movement by layering & weaving complex fictional spaces using garden designs, pattern, decoration & texture to create & deny space.

I use scale discrepancy as another invitation to movement - making mural-size works that also need to be read as miniatures, bringing the viewer to & from the surface.

Time takes hold. As the eye explores convoluted pictorial spaces in 'real time', I play with ideas of past, present & future through the pictorial space in the image; the space 'in' the picture, flatness & a space projecting into the viewer's space.

This is achieved by employing a wide variety of marking systems to enhance illusions of plausible space, trompe l'oeil &, flatness.

Finally, I include figures at leisure to conjure the notion of being in this ‘imagined garden’, & text from poetry, prose & place names are added as a way of provoking further connective layers of meaning.

Focusing on space and time I aim to provoke memory.
