Artist Statement

For the past several years, I’ve been making work that uses decorative patterns taken from my own personal history as its starting point, recreating the pattern or concentrating on just a small swatch of it, be it in a wall drawing installation or in an ongoing series of drawings on paper. Primarily, I’m interested in pattern for its relationship to the experience of place and for the part it plays in the experience of memory.

My wall drawings begin with patterns from wallpapers, tiles and other architectural details and are made by a process where I first draw, then cut a stencil through which I apply plaster directly to the wall. The images in the drawings begin as flat patterns, then arc and contort in space so that the optical effects of the pattern create illusions of movement and volume that push up against the flatness of the wall. By altering the perspective of the pattern in this way, I hope to redirect the viewer’s perspective, and in turn, their direct experience of that space.

In much the same way, the drawings on paper I make begin with patterns taken from both clothing and textiles and explore the body’s implied connection to, and impact upon, that pattern. They are deliberate concentrations on small moments, a fold, a seam, a pleat or an indentation, and are made at actual size through the layering of repetitive marks in both pen and pencil.
