Artist Statement

Maess/Artist statement

Coding websites seems very far from the romantic notion of  “the artist”: non-technical, supposedly starving soul. Therefore very often I am encountered by questions:  How can  an artist be a programmer? How can a programmer leave behind  the structured logic and create expressive drawings ?   I never suspected that learning HTML, CSS and Action Script languages, not to mention playing with MySQL databases  would expand my horizons and influence my drawing practice.
Programming is highly narrative and the source code must be transparent for a designed website. The code has to be immaculate. A single typo annihilates the end result.  Every line of code  is then decoded by various web browsers which produces different results (interpretations) according to the operating system  used and screen resolution. The programmer’s responsibility is to predict all the variants depending on computer parameters and make it visually appropriate   at each time.

Current cycle "United networks" explores  the topic of emergence as motifs to describe the idea of cyber-intuitive space. Using multilayered loops, non-linear narratives, and interactive structures as patterns, Maess creates drawings that explores raw data sets derived from sources such as professional network connections, airline destinations, demographics, Facebook mentions, and others.
